15 Emergency Self-Talk Scripts

Uncategorized Oct 08, 2018

As much I love my own company, I think a line has to be drawn when it comes to ‘talking to myself’. I have to admit though, I actually do this quite a bit and it’s not a planned conversation that I’ve scheduled for myself in my calendar. It just happens. Maybe I can’t find something or I can’t remember why I went into a certain room. It could be triggered when I’m driving along in the car and someone does something that was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. Sometimes it even happens when I’m sitting in church and the speaker says something that makes me do a mental double take.

The fact of the matter is we all talk to ourselves, all of us, but here’s the thing  . . . the issue is not so much that we talk to ourselves, it’s what we say to ourselves. This is the bigger issue. During the course of a day, how many times do you talk to yourself? 10, 20, 30 times or more?

What you say to yourself becomes what you think about yourself and impacts your self-worth, which is critical to having confidence in your ability to accomplish your life dreams and goals. If, when you engage in self-talk you speak positively about yourself and your capabilities, the chances are that you will believe you can do and accomplish anything! However, if your self-talk is negative and you regularly tell yourself that you are not good enough or that you couldn’t possibly be successful, that is exactly the message you are sending your brain and that is what you will act out.

Some people pity themselves and spend a lot of time telling themselves how awful life is for them. Are you one of them? If you are, then guess what? Your greatest enemy might just be YOURSELF.

Quotes

“Pity is a glorious attribute when it flows out toward others.” Frank Crane

“Positive anything is better than negative nothing.”  Elbert Hubbard

“Self-pity is the collapse of all the faculties, it is cowardly surrender in the face of the enemy.” Frank Crane

But there is the help . . . Here are 15 Emergency Self-Talk Scripts (ESTS's) that you can have at the tip of your tongue whenever you feel your self-talk heading south into the self-pity department:
